Transitioning from military service to civilian life is about finding a new mission—one that leverages your discipline, technical aptitude, and precision. One of the most exciting and rapidly growing industries for Canadian Veterans today is the Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) sector.
Whether you want to fly commercially in urban environments or take on complex missions like Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), becoming an Advanced or Level 1 Complex RPAS Pilot is a natural fit for the veteran skill set. Best of all? Your training can be fully funded.
1. The VAC Education and Training Benefit (Short Course Stream)
If you have served at least six years in the Canadian Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve) and were honourably released after April 1, 2006, you likely qualify for the Education and Training Benefit (ETB). While the ETB covers full degrees, it also includes a specific "Short Course" stream perfect for drone certification.
The Funding: You can access up to $5,120 (indexed annually) for short-duration courses aimed at career development.
Who Qualifies: Veterans with 6+ years of service (at least 2,191 paid days).
How to Apply:
Log into your My VAC Account.
Complete Form VAC 1537 to establish your eligibility.
Submit Form VAC 1549 (Short Course Application) along with an invoice or proof of intent to enroll from your chosen training provider.
Note: You must apply before the course start date; VAC does not provide retroactive funding.
2. Manulife / SISIP Medical Discharge Benefits
For those who were medically discharged, the path to a new career is supported by the CAF Long Term Disability (LTD) Vocational Rehabilitation Program (VRP), managed by Manulife and SISIP Financial.
The Funding: This program focuses on enhancing your existing skills to find gainful civilian employment. It can cover 100% of tuition and books for approved vocational training, up to a maximum of approximately $34,377.
Who Qualifies: Members released for medical reasons (or those assessed as "totally disabled") who are approved for CAF LTD benefits.
How to Apply:
Contact your Manulife Case Manager or SISIP representative.
You will need to propose a vocational plan that "makes medical sense" and leads to a recognized certification (like a Transport Canada RPAS Pilot Certificate).
It is recommended to start this process up to six months prior to your release date.
Veteran-Led Training: Built By Vets, For Vets
You don’t have to navigate the paperwork or the flight line alone. Companies like Veteran Elite Drone Training Services (VEdTS) and KR Droneworks are founded and led by Veterans who understand the transition process.
Veteran Elite Drone Training Services (VEdTS)

VEdTS created and offers a bespoke Advanced License course that is specifically tailored to the way Veterans learn. They provide a "one-stop-shop" experience:
Comprehensive Training: Covers everything from basic ground school to the new Level 1 Complex certification (required for BVLOS and high-risk missions).
The VEdTS Advantage: Their Advanced course package includes a drone (such as the DJI Mini series), ensuring you leave the course not just with a license, but with the equipment needed to start working immediately.
Application Support: They assist Veterans in navigating the VAC and Manulife application processes, providing the exact invoices and course descriptions the government requires.
KR Droneworks

Led by a 34-year RCAF veteran pilot, KR Droneworks brings a "Flight Safety" culture to the drone world. They specialize in bridging the gap between passing an exam and being a professional operator.
Operational Excellence: They offer "Gold Medallion" flight training that focuses on mission-ready instincts, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and emergency checklists.
Mentorship: They provide high-level mentoring for Veterans looking to turn their pilot certificate into a legitimate commercial business.
Exclusive Offer for Those Who Served:

Both KR Droneworks and VEdTS are proud to offer a special discount for Veterans and First Responders on their Ultimate RPAS Level 1 Complex training programs.
