A Public Safety Message from KR Droneworks

At KR Droneworks, we know that in Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) operations, location is everything. As of 2026, iPhone users in Canada have powerful tools to communicate even when cellular towers fail or power is out.
If you are lost or injured, these satellite capabilities can instantly turn a massive search area into a precise location for rescuers.
1. PRIORITY: Emergency SOS via Satellite
Use this immediately in life-threatening situations.
If you are in danger and have no cell signal, do not try to text a friend first. Use this dedicated feature to contact emergency services directly.
How it Works: It connects you to emergency responders via satellite. It utilizes a guided questionnaire to quickly gather vital info (your location, medical ID, and battery level) and transmits it to dispatchers.
Requirements: iPhone 14 or later running iOS 16.1+.
Cost: Free for two years after device activation.
Why GSAR Loves It: This gives us your exact coordinates immediately, allowing us to deploy drones and ground teams directly to you rather than searching a wide radius.
2. Apple's "Messages via Satellite" (Built-in)
For staying in touch and non-emergency coordination.
If you are safe but stranded, or just need to check in off-grid, use this feature.
Requirements: iPhone 14 or later running iOS 18 or newer.
How it Works: When your phone detects you are "off the grid," it prompts you to point your phone at a satellite. You need a clear view of the sky.
Capabilities:
Send iMessage and SMS texts.
Note: Does not support photos, videos, or group chats.
Limitations: May not work above 62° latitude (Northern Canada).
Pro Tip: Practice before you leave! Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Satellite Connection Demo.
3. Rogers Satellite (Direct-to-Cell)
Expanded coverage via SpaceX’s Starlink.
An alternative connectivity option that works like a standard cellular connection in dead zones.
Coverage: Primarily available south of the 58th parallel.
Capabilities: Supports standard text messaging and select third-party apps (like calls over WhatsApp), offering more flexibility than Apple's native tool.
Cost: Free on select "Popular/Ultimate" plans; otherwise $15/month.
